Conscientious Gifting with Soma and a Healthy Recipe #givesoma

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Soma, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #givesoma http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO. soma A good friend and very talented chef once told me he never drank anything other than water, while eating. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy fine wine or even a nice pint of microbrew, it was because he wanted every nuance of the food to stand on it's own.  That was more years ago, than I care to admit, and though I have had some fantastic food and wine pairings throughout the years, his advice is still my general rule of thumb.  It is in my opinion wise advice for most people. shrimp and peppers If you are going to serve water to guests, or even just yourself, it is important that there is no off-putting taste from chlorine or other chemicals.  Dining on a lovingly prepared dish of Chicken Marsala or Seared Sea Scallops, should not be interrupted by a rude  mouthful of pool water (which is what much tap water tastes like these days, from all the chlorine).  Presentation is also important.  If a healthy glass of water is served from an attractive decanter rather than tap or dispenser, it improves and elevates the overall dining experience.   This is where Soma comes in. soma box and fill I could tell the Soma water filtering decanter was different before I even opened the box.   The smart simple and eco-friendly packaging, did indeed reflect the product inside.  The Soma carafe  has an elegant modern design.  The filters for it are 100% biodegradable, and when you purchase a Soma, you are automatically enrolled in a filter replacement program.  I new filter will be sent every other month, for just $12.99 with free shipping.  If you are like me, and often forget to buy replacement filters in a timely manner this is perfect.  No matter who you are, it gives you one less concern, to clutter your mind. Declutter the world with biodegradable packaging and filters. Declutter design, by clean simple lines. Declutter our water of chemicals and pollutants. Declutter our minds from the task of replenishing filters. Notice a theme here, I certainly did. soma caraf The Soma carafe would make a lovely gift for many of those hard to buy for people on your list.  Anyone who has voiced recently, that they either started or plan to start a diet or just make some healthful changes in their life would benefit from having a Soma water carafe to help inspire them.  It would also be a great pick for those with a modern design aesthetic, as well as, anyone who is a bit of a geek (it does sort of resemble lab equipment, but in a cool way). As someone who has decided to make a greater effort to purchase American, European and Fair Trade goods, the Soma carafe system fits right in.  The carafe is made in Germany.  The filters are made in California, and a portion of profits go to provide clean drinking water to those who need it, through Soma's partnership with Charity:Water. shrimp & peppers with Soma caraf I was inspired by the fresh clean water from my Soma to create a simple healthy lunch.  It is a recipe that is low in carbohydrates, and lets the flavors of the ingredients shine through, while adding a hint of the exotic through spices.  It is the sort of dish which would be overpowered by many other beverages. The Soma water carafe is available directly from the company for $49 with free shipping.  To learn more about Soma and what they are about check out their Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and/or Instagram accounts.

Take Control of Your Wine with VinoVinti #VinoVintiNight

This post brought to you by VinoVinti. All opinions are 100% mine.

I walked into the local wine shop with an odd request recently, I wanted a wine that really needed a lot of breathing.  The lady who was the wine expert there was quite helpful and promptly gave me two selections, that in her words became entirely different wines after 20+ minutes.  I chose the Foglio 12: Rosso Colline Teatine IGT, and went on my merry way. This seemingly peculiar request, was prompted by the arrival of a VinoVinti Carbonic Acid Extractor, that the food (and in this case wine) geek in me was excited to try out.  Now I understand that a carbonic acid extractor sounds a bit like something that should be in a lab, but I assure you it is a quite simple tool and very easy to use.  By pumping out the carbonic acid the tanins and acid are reduced in the wine.

Basically just pour an ounce or two to taste, insert VinoVinti in the bottle and pump a few times.

How It Worked

When drinking red I generally prefer Zins or blends.  I like flavor, but am not a fan of harsh wines or heavy tanins.  Frankly, the sample I poured of this wine was pretty nasty before breathing or carbonic acid extraction.  A few pumps from the VinoVinti and the wine smoothed right out, allowing the subtle taste of strawberries, tea and licorice to show.  Prior to treatment the harsher elements screamed over them.  after 20 minutes I tasted from the original sample again, it had improved with breathing, but while now palatable, the wine treated with the ViniVinti carbonic acid extractor was still considerably better in my humble opinion. The process was quick, and the tool did it's job. The VinoVinti would make an excellent gift for any wine lover.  No matter what level of wine knowledge any of us have we all get a bottle that just doesn't suit us on occasion.  The VinoVinti puts the power in our hands to remedy that situation.  It can be purchased right from the company webite, for $39.95.  For even more information and to keep up to date with upcoming promotions like VinoVinti on Facebook. Help & Understanding for Opioid Addiction #ResetReality

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals Inc. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating. ResetRealityBadge Addiction to prescription opioid painkillers and heroin is devastating problem which is increasing here in the United States.  Those suffering from chronic opioid dependence and heroin addiction are often strongly stigmatized.  Sufferers are seen as morally corrupt, weak willed, bad natured and/or lacking good judgement.  These common public viewpoints only feed the problem. Prescription painkiller addiction is something that can sneak up on anyone.  Over time, the very medication that is prescribed to mitigate the pain of injuries can become a huge problem in itself.  Prescription painkillers can alter the brain’s chemistry.  They can "reset" the brain, making someone both physically and psychologically dependent on opioids, just to get through each day.  The addiction can become serious before the afflicted person or their loved ones even realize there is a problem. While I have never suffered from addiction myself, it has touched my life several times.  I've lost two friends to opioid addiction, and have one fighting it right now.  Luckily, he is doing pretty well.  It's a long road, but he seems to be doing better.  His mind certainly seems more clear, since a medication change in conjunction with treatment. For those who need help it is available.  The public health initiative Reset Reality has the goal of spreading awareness and understanding about all aspects of of opioid prescription painkiller addiction in America.  The primary mission of Reset Reality is to help individuals living with the addiction to step back, and with the healthcare professionals, begin the journey of resetting what their reality is .  The website is an excellent resource for information and tools concerning opioid dependence.  The site has a symptom screener to help visitors ascertain if they have a problem, as well as, a search function to find a doctor that is certified to treat opioid prescription painkiller and/or heroin addiction.  There is also a spot on the site where you can share your "Words of Reality" or lend support with inspirational words. side-profile-michael Just one of the stories in the “Words of Reality” section of the site is that of Michael Sorrentino from the television program “The Jersey Shore”.  His story is very much like that of my friend who is struggling with pain medication addiction at present.  A back injury required pain killer use, which escalated into dependency and addiction.  With a medication change and professional help, he is doing much better now. By stopping by the website I not only learned symptoms to look for such as drowsiness and social isolation, but was surprised by the large array of treatments available.  If you or a loved one is suffering with the difficult problem of addiction related to pain mitigation, there may be solutions you are not aware of.  it is certainly worth a look.

Look! My Dog's a "SupaStar" #HappyStartsHere #ALPO

This post brought to you by ALPO® Brand Dog Food. All opinions are 100% mine.

Our German Shepherd, Hannah, who I've previously proclaimed "the best dog eva" (at least to me),  has now added senior super model to her roster of achievements. Perhaps you've seen the funny ALPO® commercials featuring talking dogs in a focus group discussing their thoughts about ALPO® dog food. Our own Miss Hannah is the topic of their discussion in this brand new video. In Hannah’s Happy Starts Here Video by ALPO® the chatty canine focus group shares how impressed they are at how good she looks for her advanced age.  She is 84 in dog years after all.

Think that's funny? See what else our focus group has to say about our favorite blogger dogs

Part of the reason Hannah looks so good at her advanced age is due to her love of ALPO’s wet dog food.  It's made from healthy proteins and whole grains, with some vegetables for added flavor and nutrients. ALPO wet dog food is 100% complete and balanced for all our best friend's life stages, ensuring she maintains her shiny coat, strong bones and teeth.  Thank goodness too, because it was about the only thing that motivated Hannah to eat when she was having a hard time after the loss of her sister.  So happy doesn't just start with ALPO wet dog food for Hannah, it has helped her rediscover it.

Is your furry best buddy a canine superstar or just plain silly character?  Share a pic or short video clip of your beloved dog with the ALPO® Instagram page and make sure to include the  #HappyStartsHere hashtag, so we can all find it.

Holiday Your Way: Have the Best Holiday Party Ever!

This post brought to you by Bed Bath & Beyond. All opinions are 100% mine.

By this point in the holiday season, most of us are a bit burnt out on the crazy sales & in your face store ads, so piling party planning on top of the seemingly endless list of seasonal chores, can be a daunting task.   I'm happy to say, I've found a retailer who has stepped back and given the people what they want, genuinely useful Holiday Entertaining advice.

The site I'm talking about is Holiday Your Way from Bed Bath & Beyond.  It is packed with Holiday Recipes, videos and helpful articles to not only get you through the holidays, but help you knock your festivities out of the park this year.

The site is broken down into all the Holiday Entertaining essentials: Food, Entertaining, Decorating & Gifts. Since I'm Mom Foodie, let's take a peak of what you will see on the Holiday Recipes section of the site first.  The page was too packed with recipes, videos and tips to put the whole thing here, but you get the idea.

Now from what I've seen, people focus a lot on the food to serve at parties, but often struggle at presentation and actual service.  Unless you are a highly experienced hostess or have worked in the food service industry, these are things most people don't have a lot of experience with. No worries Holiday Your Way has you covered with helpful short videos showing you not only how to set the table, but even how to assemble and present a buffet, bar or dessert station.

Decorating is fun for many of us, but it's sometimes hard to keep the house in guest ready condition all the time.  Sure Holiday Your Way  has some fun tips on how to make your house a festive delight, but they also have some great strategy articles on quick tidy ups & thoughtful ways to make your guest room comfortable.

A couple of articles that really stood out for me though were in the gifting section, such as the Secret Santa Guide & tips on mailing cookies overseas.  The article about not giving "bad" gifts was pretty amusing, and who doesn't want to avoid this look...

Whatever your holiday plans encompass this year Holiday Your Way has something to help them shine brighter.  Stop over and check it out.

Applying the Homegoods Stylescope Quiz Results to my Home

This article brought to you by HomeGoods as part of their  holiday blogger challenge.  Content and opinions are my own.baking supplies

I make no secret of the fact that I am a straight-up Homegoods junkie.  Of course, I adore their sister stores (T.J. Maxx & Marshalls) as well, but it is Homegoods that fully brings out  "kid in the candy store" in me. Most of my trips net at least a few kitchen gadgets, supplies or dishes.  The store is an excellent source of quality in season goods at discount prices. Here are a few things I recently picked up for holiday baking.  The mitt even came with a bag of chocolate cupcake mix inside, making it a great gift at just $3.99. holiday dinnerware I was quite taken with a lot of the lovely dinnerware Homegoods has in stock right now, but as my kitchen is in a bit of construction upheaval I've vowed not to buy anything other than the occasion prop for food photos.  The silver & gold dishes were taunting me with their enticing sparkle, but I held strong.  They will grace another's table.

Stylescope Quiz Helps Define Style

Since the kitchen is sort of off limits at the moment, I focused on getting a few new decorations for our holiday tree & sprucing up the style in my bedroom.  Homegoods has a fun and useful tool on their site called StyleScope.  Of course, I had to give this quiz a whirl, before heading out to shop.  Here are my results. stylescope resultsThe results aren't any surprise to me, though I must say, the "and a touch" influence fluctuates based on architecture & use of room.  Living in a Victorian Era home has probably helped the Classic style maintain it's foothold with me.  The two rooms featured here today are my bedroom and double parlor.  The parlor shows the Boho flair with spicy orange walls & some ethnic pieces, whereas the bedroom is in more soothing tones. silver & gold holiday tree The Stylescope holiday decorating suggestions for Classic style included selecting decorations in monochromatic ivory tones.  This appealed to me especially since the color of my parlor walls sort of clashes with the traditional Christmas color palette.  I actually revamped my tree decor a couple years ago, to a silver & gold palette.  I guess that would equate to the Classic/Boho version of the tip. classic ornaments I picked up a box of gold crackle glass balls, as well as, a set of woodland themed blown glass ornaments in silver.  Between the new ornament additions and a few more strings of lights this year, my grapevine star looks a bit lost.  I'll be keeping my eye out for a perfect replacement.

Stylescope Bedroom Spruce Up

I did some major improvements to my bedroom about 2 1/2 years ago, but after the painting, reflooring,  DIY furniture projects and a comforter set.  I dropped the ball & my oasis from the hectic pace of life  did not fully evolve.  I came across some items at my local Homegoods that re-spurred  my interest.  The colors are perfect for the room & fit within the Classic style, while the medallion fabric & photo frame gems harken to Boho, but in a very subdued manner. bedroom selections I love the prices, considering the quality of the items.  For example, the Waterford Linens comforter was just $59.99, these luxurious & well made comforters typically sell for about $300.  Great for stylistas on a budget.  I didn't purchase either of the chests yet, but if the one in the inset circle is still there when I go back this week I will.  The handles on it are similar to my dresser & the diamond pattern is something I've repeated several times in the room (due to it's prevalence in the pressed tin ceiling). stylescope classic with touch of boho Here is my newly revamped sleeping area.  The pillow in the shot was also a Homegoods purchase, but from a few years ago. jeweled photo frame I love how the picture frame adds a little bling, but remains subtle enough not to clash with the overall style of the room.  A frame like this would make a wonderful holiday gift too. Check out the Stylescope quiz for yourself. It is quick & easy, just pick 5 images that appeal to you out of the selections, click & the tool will generate your results. Everyone I know who has tried it so far found it to be pretty accurate.
