Throughout the years my idea of what holiday traditions are important has changed considerably. Growing up, my parents were sort of over the top holiday decorators. Halloween once generated a visit from the police when one of their decorations looked a bit too realistic, and December’s electric bill would make a wallet cry. When I married and had my own home the holiday tree was my focus. I coveted fancy blown glass ornaments, and our tree was big and real. I then got a smaller white tree as an “extra” for vintage ornaments.
My holiday tree obsession underwent a huge overhaul, due to a surprise blessing. After many years of trying and finally giving up, my husband and I became parents. The white tree became the cost effective choice over buying fresh, and the thought of my inquisitive toddler cutting herself on a broken ornament, spurred me to buy shatterproof ornaments. Seeing how much she enjoyed them without mommy freaking out, made them quite beautiful to me, more so even than those fancy pants ones I had packed away in storage tubs for safe keeping.
I always planned to go back to the old ornaments, but it never did happen. They are still in those totes. By the time my daughter left the ornaments on the tree, my husband and I had separated. I went back to a fresh tree, but switched to all silver & gold decorations (mostly shatterproof), as a symbol of a fresh start. My husband was back with us for awhile, but passed away over the summer. A couple months later, my daughter wanted a cat, so we ended out adopting two kittens. Now they pull the lights off the lower boughs and roll shatterproof ornaments around the house gleefully. The thing is, my adoration of our holiday tree has transformed. Sure I enjoy looking at it neatly decorated, but it is the joy it brings to my little girl that matters now. How her mischievous kittens batting at the glittery plastic balls as they skitter across the floor make her giggle infectiously, is the sort of holiday tradition I want to embrace.
I guess my point is, traditions are as good as the joy they bring to you and your loved ones. Whether is it cherishing your family heritage or just repeating anything that has brought happiness to your family, they help bring meaning to our holidays.
